I hope this letter finds you well and that you had good and restful New Year’s holiday.
I wanted to take the opportunity of this letter to express, on behalf of The Brookings Institution, our profound gratitude for your participation in our February 6th seminar on the Taiwan Economy and a U.S.-Taiwan FTA. I have heard many positive comments about the seminar, particularly about your comprehensive preparation. Your talk framed the issues in an effective way and provided an authoritative foundation for the discussion that followed. I know that you were under a variety of pressures back in Taipei, so we especially appreciated your making the sacrifice of time to come so far to be with us.
I hope that 2007 will be a year in which our two countries can make significant progress under the energized TIFA Process and pave the way for an FTA when circumstances are right.
